boston.

i have talked about jessica hische before (check out my earlier blog post here!) but she is one of my favorite illustrators/typographers! so since we are getting more wintry weather today - i personally love all of the snow <3 - i thought i would share some wintry work from her! this series makes me so happy...and it also makes me miss boston. a lot.

alphabets.

i recently came across this site that has found a lot of different creative alphabets - there are some really really neat ones listed. these below are just some of my favs, but you should definitely check out the rest!
i especially like this last one, since this is similar to a post i made recently...but this is the complete alphabet which is much nicer!

drop cap a day.

T
hese fancy drop cap letters are so beautiful! now this kind of thing wouldn't normally be something that i would be drawn to...but each letter is just so different and intricate it is just hard not to be impressed by it - especially since all of these are done in illustrator with out any scanning!

i actually found these when i was looking for new fonts for my identity package i am working on...more about that in a bit...but these designs are by jessica hische - who actually calls herself a typographer and illustrator. she had an idea to create a different drop cap letter (like the 'T' i have included above) for each day and has been working on this since september '09.  i really wish that i could make type as beautifully as she does! these below are just a sampling of all of the letters she has done and also just a couple of my favorites:
here is the link to her website/blog, but you can also view each new addition to her drop cap a day here. you should definitely check out all the different things she has on the website - between the typography and the illustrations i could spend all day looking at her stuff...these being some of my favs: boston and spca!

but back to the reason i came across all of this! i will be graduating this may (woo!) which leads to the fact that i will need to be getting myself a job...which also leads to the fact that i need to update and rework my resume and portfolio. overall i really like the layout of both but two things have been bothering me: 1. the fonts and 2. my somewhat non-existant logo. so today i started trying to figure out what new fonts i wanted and i found the two perfect fonts! while you would think i would be excited...i am not because in order to have these two fonts it would cost me at least $400...and that would only be for part of the complete set of the fonts...grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

this is something that drives me absolutely insane! i understand the amount of time and talent it requires to create such amazing fonts - and these two fonts would be perfect - but it is so unaffordable for the average person. some websites let you buy a couple versions of the font for a good price...but the website where i found these [Hoefler & Frere-Jones - who have some amazing fonts btw] only lets you buy them in sets...and the prices range from about $150-$400. so anyway that is just something that was on my mind today! but once i get my redesigns done (which might not be for a little while) i will definitely post them for everyone to see!

tie-pography.

as i think i have said before...i love when people play around with the alphabet and type...and i have found another good example. this designer decided to make a "font" by using his large tie collection. its such a great idea, especially when he incorporates an actual knotted tie to create the y - plus the title of his work is pretty clever if you ask me!

this "font" was created by ed nacional and you can see more/better pictures of his work here!

alphabet.

i thought this was pretty neat. as i have said before, i love playing around with type so this would be fun to do sometime.

students at a school were each given a specific letter and had to find/use something to create that letter. and then they combined them together to create images for a book. i really like the 'm' - it is very clever.

these images were posted by the person who created the letter 'e' and he said that the reason he chose to create just the outline was so that the letter would take on the color it was placed on. i think this idea is best displayed in the 'enjoy' one because while the background is white...you can see the confetti through it as well and that just adds to the idea of the picture.

here is a link to the website...i wish i could see more versions with more of the letters!

fire poi typography.

i found these on flickr the other day. i think these letters look so neat! as you will see below my friend m.s. and i tried to spell things while playing with sparklers last sumer - but they didn't turn out nearly as clear as these!

on the website they called this fire poi typography and i don't know if that is a made up name or not...but it is such a clever idea. i can't even imagine how long it would have taken to get each letter correct and photographed. and whatever they used to create the flame was definitely much larger than a teeny tiny sparkler!

i love typography and fonts, so it is really interesting to find different ways of creating letter forms and this is one of my favorites - i am sure it is partially because i am somewhat of a pyromaniac - but besides that i still really enjoy these!

this is actually one of me playing with the sparklers - i was trying to spell my whole name but i only really got the "m" and a partial "o", but i really like the style of this "m". when i was thinking about creating a logo for myself i thought about using this stylized letter as my logo...unfortunately the translation from image to graphic just didn't work out.

this is our horrible attempt to spell love - we thought it would be easy but to retrace your lines exactly while doing different movements with each hand is a little complicated...and m.s. had a pretty hard time with that "e" there on the end!

here is the website - you can look at each letter individually, but i thought it looked neater to show the whole alphabet!
